Support services
Reykjavík City's policy on special education and support focuses on inclusive schooling. This means the school provides services to all students, disabled and non-disabled alike. Teachers must adapt their teaching to the student group, using various methods and activities for the students.
Support services at Fellaskóli
Fellaskóli's support services include a head of division, special education teachers, teachers, a developmental therapist, a speech language therapist and support staff.
The school's support services are divided into:
- Special education
- Developmental therapy
- Speech language therapy
- Icelandic as a second language
- Academic and social support from support staff
- Small groups for Icelandic and math
The support services team meets twice a month led by the head of support services.
Homeroom teachers apply annually for services on behalf of their students in consultation with parents. Individual curricula are developed collaboratively by homeroom teachers and support services. Parents seeking support services should contact the homeroom teacher or head of support services. New Icelanders automatically receive Icelandic as a second language services.
Fellaskóli's special education division for autistic children
Fellaskóli's special education class is one of seven City-run classes for autistic children. The class aims to support students individually, promoting learning, independence and school participation. The focus is on creating an environment suited to each student. The core of the work is student well-being, positive school experiences and collaboration with parents and professionals to ensure each student's successful schooling.
Healthcare
School healthcare provides organized health education and promotes healthy lifestyles.
School counseling
The school counselor offers students personal and social support in their studies.
Education for all
City-run primary schools in Reykjavík meet each child's educational needs regardless of their abilities or status.
Child prosperity
The Act on the Integration of Services in the Interest of Children’s Prosperity has come into effect. The goal is to ensure children and guardians receive the right assistance, at the right time, from the right parties.
Families and children in need of early support have guaranteed access to a prosperity contact in the child's immediate environment, such as in preschool or primary school. The prosperity contact offers information and guidance on services and ensures that children and guardians have unhindered access to these services.
Children, youth, and guardians can reach the school prosperity contact to request integrated services.
