Parent activities at Fellaskóli

Children's welfare and successful academic progress rely heavily on parents supporting their children's education, protecting their interests, collaborating with the school, providing relevant information, and participating in their children's learning and parent activities throughout primary school.

Successful collaboration

Information sharing between homes and schools, and cooperation between teachers and parents on learning and teaching, are crucial for successful schooling. Schools are responsible for establishing and maintaining such collaboration throughout the child's education. Parents' active involvement in their children's learning and activities is essential for them to fulfill their responsibility for their children's successful upbringing and education.

Bridge builders

The Center for Language and Literacy employs bridge builders. These employees speak Polish, Filipino, Kurdish and Arabic. Bridge builders aim to connect multilingual children and their parents with Reykjavík City's Department of Education & Youth staff. Their roles include:

  • Supporting Icelandic language learning for children of foreign origin in preschools and primary schools.
  • Assisting teachers and SFS staff in multicultural environments.
  • Helping foreign-born parents communicate and collaborate with schools.

Fellaskóli Parent Association

A parent association is a formal collaboration platform where guardians discuss children's schooling and anything related to education and upbringing. The association has worked on various projects with the school, such as outdoor celebrations and school closing ceremonies. The Parent Association raises funds through membership fees and other fundraising activities such as Christmas crafting and Easter bingo. Parents also prepare and organize a trip for 10th graders at the end of school.

Fellaskóli's parent association has an officer in SAMFOK — Alliance of Parent’s Associations and Parent’s Councils of Primary Schools in Reykjavík. The board of Fellaskóli's Parent Association works closely with parent association boards from other primary schools in Breiðholt.

Role of a parent association

Fellaskóli's parent association operates according to Article 9 of the Primary School Act. This article states that each primary school must have a parent association. The Parent Association defines its own rules of operation, including the election process for its board and the selection of representatives to the school council. The role of the parent association includes the following responsibilities:

  • Support the school's educational efforts
  • Promote the welfare of the students
  • Reinforce the connection between homes and schools
  • Encourage active guardian participation in school activities
  • Advocate for, preserve, and oversee the quality of the school's work

The board of the parent association creates a project schedule for each year, publishing it on the school's website when ready.
